W794 combines three treatment elements for the tonal balancing of stereo signals. The niveau filter makes it possible to globally adjust the frequency balance of an audio signal with 2 independent controls. The HI-EQ is a soft high-shelf equalizer. The elliptic equalizer reduces the basis width in the bass region, which increases the mono compatibility of the stereo signal.

Both the input and output of this module are balanced and floating, and the entire audio chain benefits from symmetric circuitry, which results in a headroom of +30dBu throughout the signal chain.

Niveau filter

The level filter is used to globally balance the two halves of the frequency range of a signal. Using a fixed rotation point of 800Hz (0dB axis), the balance knob increases the level of the frequencies above the axis point while simultaneously lowering the level of the frequencies below the axis point at same rate, or visa versa. The boost/cut knob adjusts the gain rate of high and low in comparison to the middle frequency range. The range for both faders is ± 16dB; the settings of these two knobs indicate the change value in the level of the low and the high frequency range.

Hi EQ

Near a balanced relation between the low, mid and high frequencies the spectral interest in the high frequency region represents an important criterion for how a mix sounds. The Hi EQ is a smooth high-shelf (Baxandall) equalizer that makes it possible to raise or lower only the high and very high frequencies. A switch with 5 selectable frequencies between 10 kHz and 25 kHz can set its center frequency. The gain range is ± 16 dB. With these regulations fast and effective adaptations of the basis character of every mix are possible with regard to an optimal spectral balance.

Elliptic EQ

The elliptic equalizer reduces the basis width from an adjustable lower border frequency, and this increases the mono compatibility of the stereo signal. The compatibility problems that are caused by time delay effects and phase displacements in the low frequency region can be solved with this device. Because every basis widening also raises counter-phase interests in both channels of a stereo signal, the mono compatibility decreases as the basis is widened. Naturally the biggest part of these signal interests appears on the basis of the level statistics in the low frequency region.

The elliptic equalizer makes use of the fact that the human hearing is generally only able to locate the direction of sound sources down to a frequency of approximately 300Hz. An adjustable crosstalk dependent on frequency is produced between the stereo channels. The frequency range is from 25Hz to 2kHz with a set gain of 15dB. Frequencies settings at 300Hz or below cause no detectable changes in the width of the stereo signal. With frequencies above 300Hz, changes can become audible.

Every element can be switched by its own ON switch independently in the audio chain.
